There is a part of me that wanted to be an Engineer. Unfortunately this part lost out to the curious school boy who never wanted to grow up. Still, there is a side of me that enjoys tinkering and inventing, usually with things pulled out of the garbage. But more than that it’s the fascination with how things work and the ways objects fit together that tickles my brain. I was told by a professor once to find what interests me the most and make that my life’s work. For me this has been difficult. My interests run far and wide and often in completely opposite directions. But there are rationalities that can bring seemingly incompatible disciplines in harmony with each other. Anyone who has studied the work of Leonardo Da Vinci will know what I’m talking about.
Mechanics, and specifically Robotics and the industrialization of Science, are disciplines that correlate so beautifully with the Esthetics of Visual Art and the Principles of Design. For me this is the place where Form and Function truley find their hub.
In 2009 I began revisiting a subject matter that I hadn’t really thought about in many years. Once again I began to connect to the foundations of what motivated me to become an artist in the first place, and also reconnect with a love of invention.
For the next year, I will be posting a New and Original Design each week. Should this prove entertaining, I’ll likely continue it indefinitely. It was my intention to begin “Weekly Robot” on the first of January 2013, but other obligations and concerns got in the way. To make up for the last several Weeks, I will be posting the Design that should have been posted from the past Weeks. At the end of this week, Original designs will be submitted for your consideration from that point onward, and hopefully for your enjoyment.
